Let’s be honest, learning new things is hard. Think about how much and how often babies need to sleep. Their brains are constantly making neural connections because they’re constantly learning new things. These connections are formed while sleeping. It’s something that we forget about as we get older - learning new things takes a physical toll on us. We need more sleep, our brains are tired so we get cranky and irritated. We start to avoid learning new things to avoid these unpleasant feelings because no one’s told you that you’re actually responding exactly the way you’re supposed to. It’s why many of us stay stuck and all of those dreams we have for our lives stay dreams. The process of personal growth sucks. It can be uncomfortable, awkward, and sometimes downright painful. But if you’re not working with your nervous system while you go about trying to learn new things by creating a self-care plan that incorporates what you need to do to make learning easy and fun, you’re just setting yourself up to fail. And if you’ve ever been through a traumatic experience - forgetaboutit! Your nervous system is EXTRA sensitive to new stimuli and will actively fight you to maintain your comfort zone. The harder you try to overcome it, the more it’s going to fight back. So the usual advice of just ‘hustle harder’ is actually detrimental. You’re never going to get ahead like that. It’s a recipe for burnout.

There’s always going to be some trial and error in the process of figuring out what works best for you. But there are ways that you can make the process of finding your way pleasant and fun rather than confusing and disheartening.
